About Centretown
Centretown is located right in the heart of Ottawa, Canada’s capital. It is bounded on the north by Gloucester Street and Lisgar Street, on the east by the Rideau Canal, on the south by the Queensway Freeway and on the west by Bronson Avenue. The neighbourhood includes Downtown Ottawa and is home to a mix of residential and commercial properties, including a large government sector. Bank Street and Elgin Street are the major commercial thoroughfares where you’ll find office buildings, shops, restaurants and essential services.
It is conveniently located right in the middle of everything – entertainment, shopping, tourist attractions, and employment centers– all within walking distance (in 2006 - 43.7% of Centretown residents walked to work). Also a large variety of bus routes guarantees an easy commute to anywhere in Ottawa.
Centretown Housing
You'll find a mix of housing options in Centretown. Residential streets offer older single family homes as well as newer townhomes and low- and high-rise apartment buildings. Centretown homes are mostly high and low-rise apartments and condominiums (86% of all Centretown housing), with about 4.5% - single homes, 2.2% - semi-detached, 4.8% - row houses. The late 90s gave rise to a construction boom in Centretown which increased the number of condominiums and buildings north of Cooper Street.
Centretown Dining, Shopping and Entertainment
Centretown offers several grocery stores as well as a wide variety of specialty food stores (about 28) and 23 convenience stores. Centretown also offers four indoor recreation facilities as well as 21 sites for summer recreation and 2 sites for winter recreation.
The Canadian Museum of Nature, Dundonald Park, Jack Purcell Park, the Ottawa Curling Club and the Central Bus Station are all located in Centretown.
